British, it really is the best

St George's day came and went and nobody really seemed to make much fuss at all. Other nations seem very proud of their national day, the Irish have made a world export of St Patrick's Day. So this page is dedicated to everything that is British and why is is best. We should be a proud nation. Its a great country to live in, don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

The Weather

This is always a good place to start. You might think that it is all us Brit's ever talk about, just how bad the weather is. I live in Manchester which is notorious for rain. A Manchester summer can often be several weeks of constant rain, and indeed the past few years have been no exception. Two years ago we had a loft conversion, the builders came, took of the roof, then it started to rain and didn't stop for the next six weeks.

The trouble is we have a complicated weather system. There are potentially four different fronts that can affect us, which makes it notoriouisly difficult to predict exactly what weather we are going to get. Look at the following pictures, taken one day apart and in the same location. Still, we love our weather, it gives us something to talk about (and you'll always get a Brit talking about the weather).

We do love our weather

Our sense of humuor

One thing I think that stands us Brits out from the rest is our ability to not take ourselves too seriously, people seem to have an inbuilt dry, witty sense of humour. Perhaps its because we are never really that much good at anything (see my later section on sport) we have developed this art form. One thing to mention, humour does not start and end with Monty Python, there is so much more out there. Attend any football match and there are bound to be some really witty chants and songs. Humour is part of our psyche, integral to us. After all, if you can't laugh you'd cry.
To prove my point here are some of my favourite British comedians and comedy shows, past and present.
Stan Laurel
Rowan Atkinson here in scene from Blackadder III
John Cleese beats up his car in Fawlty Towers
Only Fools and Horses
Peter Kay in Phoenix Nights
The Thick Of It

To be continued in part 2 .....
